These Terms of Service govern your use of Heat Signature, including the website, Chrome extension, proof tools, verification tools, and related services. By using Heat Signature, you agree to these terms.
The Service
Heat Signature analyzes document-history metadata to help evaluate whether writing appears to have been composed by a person over time. The service is designed to use timing, revision, provenance, and cryptographic proof signals rather than document text submitted for research.
Heat Signature is an authorship and provenance aid. It is not a guarantee of authorship, originality, academic integrity, legal compliance, or the absence of AI assistance.
Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for how you use Heat Signature and for the documents, metadata, verification text, labels, notes, citations, and contact information you submit.
- Submit only information you have the right to submit.
- Do not use Heat Signature to violate privacy, confidentiality, intellectual property, school, workplace, platform, or legal obligations.
- Do not submit verification text unless you have the right to check it.
- Do not attempt to reverse engineer, bypass, overload, scrape, attack, or misuse the service.
- Do not use Heat Signature to make deceptive, defamatory, harassing, or unlawful claims about another person.
Submitted Information
You retain any rights you have in your documents and submitted materials. You grant Heat Signature permission to process submitted information as needed to provide, secure, maintain, evaluate, and improve the service.
For research submissions, this permission includes using deidentified typing metadata, provenance signals, document-level statistics, submission labels, feedback, and derived signals to improve future versions of Heat Signature. Optional email addresses are not used for model training.
If you provide citation details for pasted passages or create proof records meant to be shared, those details may be shown to people who use the relevant verification link or proof tool.
Proofs And Verification
Heat Signature proof links and verification results are probabilistic tools. They may be incomplete, incorrect, unavailable, or misunderstood. You should not treat a Heat Signature score, proof, or mismatch as the sole basis for a serious decision about a person, publication, job, grade, investigation, or legal matter.
No Professional Advice
Heat Signature does not provide legal, academic, employment, compliance, security, or forensic advice. You are responsible for obtaining appropriate professional guidance before relying on Heat Signature in high-stakes settings.
Intellectual Property
Heat Signature, including its software, models, designs, names, logos, documentation, and service content, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. These terms do not give you ownership of Heat Signature.
You may use the service for its intended purpose, subject to these terms. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, lease, or create competing services from Heat Signature except where permitted by law or by a separate written agreement.
Third-Party Services
Heat Signature may depend on third-party platforms, browsers, hosting providers, storage providers, analytics, security tools, or document services such as Google Docs. We are not responsible for third-party services, and their own terms and policies may apply.
Availability And Changes
Heat Signature is evolving. We may change, suspend, limit, or discontinue any part of the service at any time. We may also update these terms. Continued use of Heat Signature after updated terms are posted means you accept the updated terms.
Termination
We may suspend or terminate access to Heat Signature if we believe you violated these terms, created risk for the service or others, or used the service unlawfully or abusively.
Disclaimers
Heat Signature is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be accurate, uninterrupted, secure, or error-free.
Limitation Of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Heat Signature and its operators will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, reputational harm, business interruption, or decisions made in reliance on the service.
Indemnity
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Heat Signature and its operators from claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, and expenses arising from your use of the service, your submitted information, your violation of these terms, or your violation of someone else's rights.
Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, unless a different law is required by applicable consumer protection law.
